Tewkesbury Google Ads, from the Abbey to junction 9
Tewkesbury Abbey draws around 250,000 visitors a year, yet Historic England found that very few of them walk on into the town centre. That gap, and the growth out at Ashchurch and Northway by junction 9 of the M5, shapes how we would run Google Ads here. Prices start at £150 a month on top of ad spend, and there is nothing to pay for setup.

As a Head of Marketing, I've worked with a number of external agencies supporting us with Google Ads, and SearchMaven stands out for its strategic approach and consistent performance.
Working with William has been a pleasure he's a great person to work with, technically highly competent but also full of ideas.
Had a great time working with the team. Very experienced team, fast moving and affordable. Would recommend.
Heritage streets, new estates and junction 9
Tewkesbury Borough grew from about 81,900 to 94,900 people between 2011 and 2021, the largest percentage rise in the South West according to the ONS. Much of that growth sits east of the old town, around Ashchurch, Northway and Walton Cardiff, and an outline application for up to 2,800 more homes at North Ashchurch went in during June 2025. Households that have just moved search for everything at once: a plumber, a dentist, a dog groomer, a takeaway. They have no habits yet, so a well-placed ad can become the habit.
Employment has moved the same way. Moog opened its £40m aircraft controls site at Ashchurch in May 2023 with nearly 400 staff, and Cotteswold Dairy, Ashchurch Business Centre, Tewkesbury Business Park on Delta Drive and the MOD vehicle depot all sit close to junction 9. For B2B suppliers, that cluster is a small, defined audience that suits tight keyword lists rather than broad ones.
The historic centre is the harder case. Abbey visitors arrive in good numbers and leave without seeing the shops, so cafés, pubs and independents in the centre are bidding for people who are already in town but do not know what is round the corner.
Drawing the Tewkesbury targeting map
For a trade or home service, we would centre the account on the town and the estates to the east, Ashchurch, Northway and Walton Cardiff, then add Twyning and Bishops Cleeve only if you really travel there. Cheltenham is about 9 miles away and is a separate market with its own competitors, so we would normally leave it out at first rather than let the budget drift. Ashchurch for Tewkesbury station is under a quarter of a mile from junction 9 and about 2 miles from the town, another reason to treat the east side as its own zone.
For trades we would tick Google’s presence option, which limits ads to people physically in or habitually around those places. Centre businesses chasing Abbey visitors are the exception: many plan the trip from home, so “presence or interest” fits them better.

Where ad spend makes most sense in Tewkesbury
Home and trade services
The borough’s rapid growth, much of it east of the town, and up to 2,800 more homes proposed at North Ashchurch mean a steady flow of first-time searches for fitters, cleaners, gardeners and repairs. We would run tight local campaigns with call assets, test evening and weekend scheduling, and count calls rather than clicks.
Junction 9 suppliers
Moog’s Ashchurch site, Cotteswold Dairy, the MOD vehicle depot and the firms on Tewkesbury Business Park create demand for services such as engineering, maintenance, logistics, catering and recruitment. Search volume for these is small, so we would use exact and phrase match keywords, exclude consumer wording and judge success by qualified enquiries.
Visitor-facing town centre
With roughly 250,000 people a year visiting the Abbey and few carrying on into the centre, cafés, pubs, shops and places to stay can use ads to close that short gap. Location assets showing your distance, mobile-first ads and searches such as “lunch near Tewkesbury Abbey” are where we would begin.
When demand moves in Tewkesbury
- July
- The free Tewkesbury Medieval Festival, which re-enacts the 1471 battle, is the town’s headline event. We would raise budgets around the festival dates and run event-specific ads for food, drink and places to stay.
- All year
- Abbey visitors arrive in every month, around 250,000 a year in total. A small always-on campaign for a centre business catches them on their phones while they decide where to go next.
How a Tewkesbury account usually starts
- 01
Split the account into two zones from day one: the historic centre for visitor searches, and Ashchurch, Northway and Walton Cardiff for household and trade searches, each with its own budget and location setting.
- 02
Check your Google Business Profile and location assets so ads show how close you are to the Abbey or to junction 9, whichever matters to your customers, and get calls and enquiry forms tracked before spending anything.
- 03
Build negative keyword lists that keep out searches for other towns and job seekers looking at Moog or the MOD depot, then review the search terms report every week for the first month.

Questions from Tewkesbury businesses
It can be. Historic England put the Abbey at about 250,000 visitors a year, but found very few go on into the town centre. That is a gap ads can work on, because the audience is already a short walk away. We would target mobile searches from people in or interested in Tewkesbury, use location assets that show your distance, and check whether the ads bring people through the door before raising spend.
Usually, yes. Between 2011 and 2021 the borough grew faster, in percentage terms, than anywhere else in the South West, and much of the new housing and employment is out by junction 9. Giving that side its own campaign lets us see whether it produces enquiries, set its own budget and write ads that name the estates. If North Ashchurch gets permission for its proposed 2,800 homes, the zone grows again.
Yes, and those campaigns are small and precise. Moog’s Ashchurch site employs nearly 400 people, with Tewkesbury Business Park, Ashchurch Business Centre and Cotteswold Dairy nearby, so we would combine a tight radius around the junction with searches for your specialism wherever buyers are, and exclude job-hunting terms. We charge £150 a month with no fixed term, and you can leave with 30 days’ notice.
